Tradition Enquiry in the Evangelical Tradition, Part Five: Journals Catering toward Evangelical Scholarship

 

Introduction

Tradition Enquiry for Evangelicals will involve engaging with past and present scholarship within the broad tent of 'Evangelicalism'.  As Evangelical is a movement more than a theological tradition itself, albeit a Protestant and theologically orthodox movement, it involves several streams of tradition--especially the Reformed, Wesleyan, Baptistic, and Pentecostal.  Within Evangelicalism are then some narrower emphases that are less cooperative with the broader tent and more focussed on a narrower corner of Evangelicalism.

In my understanding of what should constitute 'Evangelicalism', I would say that one hoping to research within the movement that makes up Evangelicalism needs to do so by:

1. intentionally reading material and engaging with scholars and ministries that are Evangelical;

2. intentionally reading material and engaging with scholars and ministries that remain faithful to the Reformation's emphases;

3. intentionally reading material and engaging with scholars and ministries that remain orthodox, including the orthodox within the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Church.

Churchman is an international journal produced quarterly by Church Society. The journal was first published in 1879 and since that time it has established its place as essential reading for Christians who wish to gain a Biblical perspective on a range of matters. Leading writers deal with current issues, historical themes, and the Evangelical doctrine in which we believe. The journal appears on this site by permission of Churchman's Editorial Committee. Articles published more than 70 years ago are now in the Public Domain.

The North American Anglican exists to glorify Christ and to serve the people of his Church. We hope to provide a resource and forum for proclaiming and discussing those Evangelical and Catholic truths, which find their home in historic Anglican theology.

Regular contributors share a commitment to the supreme authority of sacred scripture in matters of faith and morals. They also gladly affirm the 39 Articles of Religion and the historic Book of Common Prayer, as authoritative norms and standards for authentic Anglican faith and piety.

The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology is published three times a year by Southern's School of Theology and features articles by the faculty of Southern Seminary as well as leading evangelical scholars from around the world.

Southwestern Journal of Theology, Southwestern Journal of Theology

The Southwestern Journal of Theology is the oldest theological journal continually published by a Southern Baptist seminary. Currently edited by David S. Dockery, Distinguished Professor of Theology, this resource is as much for current students as it is for alumni and the church at large.

Journal of Baptist Theology and Ministry, BiblicalStudies.org.uk: Journal for Baptist Theology and Mission Vols. 1- (2003- )

‘The Journal of Ministry & Theology, encourages pastors, church leaders, scholars, missionaries and others who love the church of Jesus Christ to think biblically regarding contemporary theological issues, ministry concerns and methodologies facing the church, academy and individual believers.’  It ‘is published semiannually by the Baptist Center for Theology and Ministry, which is a research institute of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The BCTM exists to provide theological and ministerial resources to enrich and energize ministry in Baptist churches.’

4.     Catholic

The Institute on Religion and Public Life, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (EIN: 52-1628303) and the publisher of First Things, was founded in 1989 by Richard John Neuhaus, a Lutheran pastor who later became a Catholic priest. The Institute’s mission is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society.

The inaugural issue of First Things was published in March 1990. The magazine’s founding editorial, “Putting First Things First,” can be found here. Today, First Things encompasses the print magazine, which is published ten times each year; firstthings.com, which publishes daily “web exclusive” articles; and two regular podcasts: Conversations with Mark Bauerlein and The Editor’s Desk. 

5.     Lutheran

Concordia Journal, Concordia Journal | Concordia Seminary, St. Louis

‘Concordia Journal is one of the flagship theological journals of North American Lutheran Christianity. The publication explores urgent ideas, themes and issues related to the past, present and future of global Christianity and today’s world from a confessionally Lutheran perspective. Concordia Journal is published quarterly (winter, spring, summer, fall).’

6.     Mennonite

Vision ‘is published twice a year to encourage theological reflection on the identity, mission, and practices of the church from an Anabaptist-Mennonite perspective.

The journal is published by the Institute of Mennonite Studies at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary and by the Canadian Mennonite University Centre for Faith and Life (Winnipeg, MB).’

7.     Pentecostalism

Reformed Faith & Practice (Reformed Theological Seminary Journal), Reformed Faith & Practice: The Journal of Reformed Theological Seminary

Reformed Faith & Practice: The Journal of Reformed Theological Seminary is edited by members of the faculty of the Seminary, and it seeks to further the mission of the Seminary, which is to “serve the church by preparing its leaders, through a program of theological education, based on the authority of the inerrant Word of God, and committed to the Reformed faith.” RF&P is published three times per year and is distributed electronically for free.

Westminster Theological Journal, Westminster Theological Journal

‘The Westminster Theological Journal (WTJ), published semi-annually, is one of America’s premier conservative theological journals, specializing in all aspects of theology, church history, ethics, and biblical interpretation. The journal’s inaugural issue appeared in 1938, making it one of America’s oldest continuous running theological journals. The journal exists to further Reformed theological scholarship and through it to serve the ministers and members of Presbyterian and Reformed churches. Each issue includes a number of scholarly articles and book reviews by seminary and college faculty, scholars active in their fields, and graduate students.’

9.     Wesleyan

10.  Evangelical

Evangelicalism is a combination of traditions that are theologically orthodox and Protestant and that follow in an historical tradition of revivalist and reformational (e.g., pietism, holiness, Pentecostal) emphases.  Some journals or online publications in this tradition cater toward one wing of the Evangelical movement (e.g., Bibliotheca Sacra, the Gospel Coalition, etc.), while others cater toward the broader agreements of the Evangelical tent.  ‘Evangelical’ now has a ‘progressive’ wing that I would suggest is no longer in the Evangelical tradition, just as the Prosperity Gospel version of Pentecostalism is outside the tent.  That said, here are some journals that fit one way or another in the category of ‘Evangelical’ that might be consulted.  Two seminaries initially established specifically for Evangelical churches, Fuller and Gordon-Conwell, do not have seminary journals, whereas Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (an Evangelical Free seminary that is more broadly Evangelical than the denomination) does.  In Canada, Regent Seminary is broadly Evangelical.

This journal has locked articles, but one can see authors and titles.  It originates in the United Kingdom.  The ‘Evangelical Quarterly is an international, peer-reviewed journal which reflects and respectfully engages with the evangelical Christian faith. First published in 1929, it features articles on the Old and New Testaments, biblical and systematic theology, church history, pastoral theology, mission and apologetics, as well as reviews of books in these fields. Its contributors span the range from renowned experts to emerging scholars, and it serves both the academy and the church.’

Journal of Evangelical Theological Studies, JETS PDF Archive – Evangelical Theological Society

The journal’s articles are available to the public up to the last two years.  The Evangelical Theological Society was founded in 1949. It holds regional and national meetings in America and Canada.  Its doctrinal statement is: ‘The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written and is therefore inerrant in the autographs. God is a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each an uncreated person, one in essence, equal in power and glory.’  The society publishes articles and book reviews in theology and Biblical studies.

These two journals are from The Evangelical Review - Home.  ‘The Evangelical Review of Society and Politics and The Evangelical Review of Theology and Politics, are international peer-reviewed journals exploring Evangelical issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. The purpose of the journal is to bring an international and scholarly Evangelical analysis to bear upon various social and political issues of national and international interest. It should be stressed that FIDES ET HISTORIA does not deal only with religious or church history; the editors welcome scholarly research that is relevant to the journal’s core readership of historians who teach at Christian colleges, universities, and secondary schools. The journal also publishes reflections on theories and methods of history from a Christian perspective.’

Lucas, LUCAS-ARCHIVE

‘Lucas: An Evangelical History Review was first issued in November 1987 and it publishes two issues a year, depending on submissions. It is peer-reviewed and enjoys an international distribution. Its focus is on the history of Australian evangelicalism, but it does publish quality submissions on the wider history of evangelicalism. It also welcomes submissions on the topic of evangelicalism and methodology.’  Open access articles.

Pro Ecclesia, Pro Ecclesia: Sage Journals

Volumes 1–16 were published under the title The Tyndale House Bulletin.

The journal is published in association with Biola University’s Rosemead School of Psychology (Rosemead School of Psychology - Biola University).  ‘The Journal of Psychology and Theology is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal publishing original research on the integration of psychology and Christian theology. Empirical studies (though purely conceptual pieces will also be considered) investigating the interrelationships between psychological (e.g., clinical, experimental, industrial/organizational, social, theoretical) and theological topics of study are welcome. Scholarship that explores the application of these interrelationships in a variety of contexts (e.g., mental health counseling, education and training, organizational leadership, churches and other Christian ministry contexts) and/or from an intercultural perspective are also encouraged.’

Masters Seminary Journal, The Master’s Seminary Journal |

The Masters Seminary is associated with the ministry of John McArthur.  ‘Published semi-annually, The Master’s Seminary Journal serves pastor-theologians charged to lead, feed, and guard their local churches, as well as the godly laymen who are called to support and serve alongside them in the work of the ministry.’

Themelios, Themelios

Themelios ‘is an international, evangelical, peer-reviewed theological journal that expounds and defends the historic Christian faith. Its primary audience is theological students and pastors, though scholars read it as well. It began in 1975 and was operated by RTSF/UCCF in the UK, and it became a digital journal operated by The Gospel Coalition in 2008.’  The Gospel Coalition The Gospel Coalition (TGC) publishes articles within a North American, Evangelical, and Reformed fellowship of Christian churches.
