In this post, I offer a list of
places to study and train for ministry in Africa. This list is certainly
incomplete, and no attempt has been made to assess the various theological
colleges listed. Some Roman Catholic institutions are listed, but most
are Protestant institutions. One reason for the list is to note the development
of theological training on the continent where the Church is growing fastest.
Some of the listed institutions are accredited or validated and some are
not. Some are questionable theologically (and may even be heretical!) or
academically. The purpose of this list is to give people a place to start
investigating further within a country without offering any recommendation for
where to study. Persons interested in study may begin by googling a
specific institution, examining the website of a given denomination or
accrediting agency, getting recommendations from others in ministry, visiting
the campus and meeting the faculty and current students, etc. For higher
education, an applicant might see what academic writing faculty members have
done (not just that they have published but what they say).

Some considerations when pursuing theological studies for ministry might include the following:
*Theological
orthodoxy (why study anywhere else unless completing a doctorate?)
*Theological
tradition (train for your theological context, but note that colleges may and
often do have a broader perspective than a single denominational focus--and a broader (but solidly orthodox) student body may be a good experience)
*Personal
fit (church, theology, age, gender, needs, etc.)
*Ministerial
preparation (how does one prepare for ministry at this college? Mentoring?
Field experience? Classes?)
*Spiritual
formation (how does one grow spiritually during training/study?)
*Academic
studies (is the institution at the right academic level for you?)
*Faculty (do you know any of the faculty? Do they model spirituality, ministry, academic study?)
*Accreditation/Validation
(if accreditation or validation is important to you, be sure the college offers
this. While this is often important as
it assures the student that the college is offering a respectable degree, be
aware that accreditation often drives up the price of a degree)
*Price
(check out what the degree costs are for tuition and, if appropriate, room and
board)
*Place
(if residential, what would it be like to spend your time of study in this
region?)
*Language
of study
*Graduates
(what kind of graduates does the college have?
Do they stay in ministry? In
which churches/denominations? Will you
make lasting friendships in ministry by studying here?)
*Possible
continuation (if you study here and are interested in further studies, will it
open up opportunity to study elsewhere or will you close off options because
you study here!)
