Key Verses for This Ministry:

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

2 Timothy 2:2  what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Ephesians 4:11-13 The gifts he [Christ] gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,  12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,  13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

My Own Training for this Work:

I hold a B.A. from the University of Michigan with majors in philosophy and psychology, an M.T.S. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in New Testament Studies, and a PhD from Duke University in New Testament and Christian Origins.  My doctoral dissertation, 'Gospel and Mission in Paul's Ethics' (1989) argued for a narrative approach to ethics in Paul and for a relation between the Gospel as narrative, ethics, and mission in Paul's life and thought, as well as the church as an embodiment of the Gospel and imitation of Paul's life.

I have taught since 1985 in various countries and lived in a number of them, starting programs, teaching courses, and engaging in mission activities.

My Current Appointments:

Co-Dean for PhD programme of the Oxford Centre for Religion and Public Life and Stellenbosch University (South Africa)
Professor of Biblical Theology and Ethics, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (USA)
